How To Choose Your Makeup Artist

Updated: Jan 9, 2023

"You want someone who is easy to be around"

So now that you’ve told your nearest and dearest, booked your date and viewed some tips on how to get the ball rolling, it’s time to think about who you want to make you up on your big day.

You may have been browsing online and have come across a couple of makeup artists that catch your eye. The following points should help you to make the decision on how to find your makeup artist.

First of all, does the makeup artist have a style that you like? If you’d like to wear a full face of makeup, complete with lashes and lipstick, someone who specialises in a very natural and soft makeup styling might not be the most suitable MUA for you. Whilst all makeup artists should be comfortable with all makeup styles, ideally you want your bridal makeup artist to reflect the kind of makeup you want to wear and the look you want to achieve.

Secondly, does the makeup artist have a portfolio of photos from previous brides? A selection of photos (see example) will give you a good idea of the kind of work the makeup artist has carried out in the past. It may also reassure you that they have a good track record of bridal makeup application.

Think about your budget. You should have already factored in your makeup in your wedding budget and you really want to stick to it. It’s so easy to lose track and nobody wants to start married life in debt! Request a quote from your makeup artist or ask for their price list. Don’t forget to factor in any mileage fees that your makeup artist might have in place as some MUAs travel outside of their area.

Lastly, and maybe most importantly, does your makeup artist give you good vibes? Remember that you’re essentially having a stranger be part of your wedding morning around your family and friends. You want someone who is easy to be around, is friendly and makes the morning run smoothly. You can usually get a good vibe from someone through initial correspondence. If you get the overall feeling that your MUA is a genuine person and a professional, you’ve got your MUA!

Hopefully this helps! Happy planning!
